Linear Potentiometer
A displacement potentiometer, also known as a linear potentiometer or a linear position sensor, is a device used to measure linear displacement (movement) in a variety of mechanical and industrial applications. It operates by converting the physical movement of an object into an electrical signal, typically used to monitor or control the position of that object.
How a Displacement Potentiometer Works?
The potentiometer consists of a resistive element and a movable contact (wiper). As the object moves, it changes the position of the wiper along the resistive element, causing a change in resistance. This change in resistance is then converted into an electrical output (typically a voltage) that is proportional to the object’s position.

- Spring-loaded Potentiometers: MDP42 is a spring-loaded rugged potentiometric-based displacement sensor suitable for static measurement in harsh environments. This compact displacement sensor offers great flexibility and reliability for a wide range of applications with highly competitive pricing. MDP42 is available in measuring ranges from 10 to 100mm with a Voltage output, relative to supplied input voltage. The spring-loaded potentiometer shaft is running in a precision bearing and this potentiometer is suitable for accurate industrial displacement measurements. It has the option of having a hemispherical tip or a roller ball depending upon the application requirements. Standard Nonlinearity of this sensor is ±0.1% FS. The robust construction of MDP42 with its high performance makes it ideal for demanding long-term applications.
- Rod-Type Displacement Potentiometers: A direct-contact design where the rod slides within the potentiometer housing as the object moves. MDP41 series with rod end connection is a rugged potentiometer-based displacement sensor suitable for static measurement in harsh environments. This compact displacement sensor offers great flexibility and reliability for a wide range of applications with highly competitive pricing. MDP41 is available in measuring ranges from 50 to 600mm with a Voltage output (relative to supplied input voltage). It is suitable for industrial measurements that require non-lateral movement or quick installation. Standard Nonlinearity is ±0.1% FS for 50-150mm and ±0.05% FS for 150-600mm.
