    FAQs

Q: What’s the difference between a pressure transmitter and a pressure transducer?

A pressure transducer converts pressure into an electrical signal, typically a voltage output. A pressure transmitter includes a transducer but has additional circuitry to condition and amplify the signal, usually outputting a standard industrial signal like 4-20 mA. This makes pressure transmitters more suitable for long-distance signal transmission in industrial settings. Transmitters often have more features, such as local displays or advanced diagnostics. At MeasureX, we offer both options, but for most industrial applications, we recommend pressure transmitters for their robustness and compatibility with control systems. However, a simple pressure transducer might be the better choice for OEM applications or where space is limited.

Q: How does a differential pressure transmitter work and what are its main applications?

A differential pressure transmitter measures the difference in pressure between two points in a system. It has two pressure ports: a high side and a low side. The transmitter calculates the difference between these pressures and outputs a signal proportional to this difference. This makes differential pressure transmitters incredibly versatile. They’re commonly used to measure pipe flow rates by measuring the pressure drop across a restriction like an orifice plate. They also monitor tank liquid levels, especially in pressurised vessels where a simple level sensor wouldn’t work.

Q: Can you explain how a water level sensor works and its advantages over other measurement methods?

Water level sensors come in various types, but one common method uses hydrostatic pressure measurement. This type of sensor, often called a submersible level transmitter, measures the pressure exerted by the liquid column above it. As the water level changes, so does the pressure, allowing for accurate level measurement. The sensor converts this pressure into an electrical signal, which can be easily integrated into control systems. The main advantages of this method are its simplicity and reliability. It’s not affected by foam, vapour, or internal tank obstructions that can interfere with other level measurement technologies.

Q: How do load cells and force sensors differ in their applications and installation requirements?

Load cells are typically designed for measuring weight or downward force. They usually require specific mounting considerations to ensure accurate readings, often needing special mounts or civil works for large-scale applications. Force sensors are more versatile in measuring forces, including compression, tension, and sometimes torque. They’re often smaller and can be integrated into machinery or testing equipment. Force sensors are commonly used in manufacturing for press force monitoring, in robotics for grip force control, or in quality testing for material strength analysis.
